Department of Chemistry hosts Second Annual Future Faculty Symposium
The event showcased the research of early-career scientists who have demonstrated contributions to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.
On Tuesday, August 22, the Department of Chemistry hosted the second annual Future Faculty Symposium, a two-day event that showcased the research of exceptional early-career scientists who have demonstrated contributions to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.
Applications arrived from academic institutions across the country, and from this talented pool emerged four postdoctoral researchers that comprised the speakers of the event:
Dr. Steven Chapman, Northwestern University

Dr. Lauren Hagler, Stanford University
Helping People through RNA Chemical Biology and Structure
Dr. Melissa Ramirez, Caltech
Ni-Catalyzed a-Spirocyclization of y-Lactones
Dr. Antonio Tinoco Valencia, Harvard University
Deciphering Human Gut Microbial Cholesterol Metabolism Using Chemical and Engineering Tools
Each speaker at the symposium is currently conducting postdoctoral research with the intention of imminently applying to professorships at universities in the United States. Following their talks, which were presented in a hybrid fashion, in person in Room 6-120 and via Zoom, and a reception thereafter, the speakers were able to meet with current MIT Chemistry faculty about research and teaching opportunities, tour our campus and research facilities, and meet with students and staff working to increase diversity and inclusion within MIT Chemistry.
The event was enjoyable and valuable for all, and a true credit to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC)’s ongoing efforts.
