Chemistry Major Jupneet Singh named Rhodes Scholar

Jupneet Singh, a U.S. Air Force ROTC Cadet Lieutenant Colonel and Senior Chemistry Major with a flex in Biomedical Engineering and a Minor in History, is one of three MIT students chosen to receive a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Each year, Rhodes awards 32 scholarships to U.S. citizens plus additional scholarships for citizens from non-U.S. constituencies.

Over the course of her undergraduate studies at MIT, Singh has worked in the Shalek Lab studying fatty liver disease, and has conducted natural products research in the Nolan Lab. “I chose to major in chemistry because I really enjoying combining math and life science, and chemistry does a really good job of that,” said Singh. “It is also applicable to my career in medicine and taught me how to problem solve.”

Originally from Somis, California, Singh will begin her fully funded postgraduate studies at Oxford University next fall. There, she intends to pursue a MSc in evidence-based social intervention and policy evaluation, and then plans to attend medical school and complete her residency as an active-duty Air Force Captain.

“I’ll definitely reflect on all the amazing friends I’ve made here,” said Singh regarding her MIT experience. “I truly feel so thankful so have such an incredible support system, and MIT was so much more than I expected because of the people I’ve met.”
